The People We Treat Client Base: The Salam Medical Center is dedicated to providing excellent health care for the people in and around Qanatir. In a country often divided on religious lines, the Salam Medical Center provides a welcoming place for people from different faith backgrounds; the Muslim majority and Christian minority are equally represented among the staff, and although patients are not asked for their religious affiliation, staff estimate that the proportions are about 88 % Muslim and 12 % Christian. |

Taking good care of our patients

Qanatir is typical of many Egyptian communities,
with farming and manual labour as the main occupations. Unemployment is
high, while illiteracy and poverty remain significant factors in the region’s
development. The Salam Medical Center serves an important purpose in improving
the health of the poor in the region; fees are reduced or even waived for
patients who are unable to afford to pay. Support for the medical center comes primarily from donations, private contracts with businesses for employee care, and patient fees. Funding for major equipment purchases and expansion comes mainly from donations. Income from patient fees and business contracts covers the cost of subsidizing care for those patients who require financial assistance. Thus, the Salam Medical Center’s services are available to all members of the Egyptian community. |

Medical care in Egypt is divided between private hospitals and government-run institutions. Estimates vary, but Muslims make up about 90-95 % of Egypt’s population, Christians make up about 5-10 %, and other religions make up a small proportion of the country’s people. |
