The Egyptian Revolution - which started in Jan, 2011 - brought an offical end to the decades-long rule of President Hosni Mubarak. It also brought a wide range of other changes to Egypt, and to the region. While many people felt a great deal of optimism at the beginning of the revolution 5 years ago, many hopes remain unfilled at this point in time. 

The economy has been particularly affected since the revolution. Employment opportunities have been particularly affected, and many people have lost their jobs. Combined with a significant increase in the cost of living, this has left many families increasingly financially vulnerable and struggling with food insecurity. As a result, the need for affordable health care has increased dramatically over the last several years.

Although the gap between rich and poor can be significant in Egypt, as in the rest of the world, and inter-religious tensions sometimes break out into violence, projects like the Salam Medical Center are helping to ease both problems. Patients, staff and volunteers all come from various religious and economic backgrounds. Muslims, Christians, and other groups all receive care, and while some patients are part of company-paid contracts, the majority of patients pay little or nothing for the services they receive

The Salam Medical Center is a not-for-profit hospital in El-Qanatir Elkhaireya , Egypt (population approx 450,000). The center started in 1996, under the auspices of the Egyptian Protestant church (the Evangelical Church of Egypt, Synod of the Nile). The centre operates with a mandate to promote and build positive relations among people of different faiths while providing high-quality health care to the people in and around the city. Currently, the Center includes medical and dental clinics, a wide variety of specializations, and a pharmacy in approximately 640 square metres of space.
